Spring Sunflowers in Woodburning

Celebrate Spring by learning the art of woodburning with our wonderful instructor Jan Carney. To bring their sunflowers to life, Jan will teach students proper woodburning techniques. These include how to transfer an image to a surface, how to properly outline, and three different ways to shade. Students will learn how to choose and prepare a surface to burn. The sunflower image will be burnt into a live-edge basswood plaque. Jan will ensure that students learn how to preserve their woodburned art so that it can be enjoyed for years to come. Students should bring a pack of Prismacolor pencils so that color can be added to their work.

About the Instructor

Jan Carney

After retiring from nursing, I began to paint. I have always loved to draw and this seemed like the next step up. Since then, I have taken probably a dozen classes in different subjects such as watercolor, acrylics, mixed media, clay, and a basket making. I continue to take classes as I feel you can always learn something new! I work in several mediums including pyrography, watercolor, acrylics, mixed media, graphite, recently gourd art, and colored pencils. I am a member of several arts organizations and groups in NE Georgia, including, the Blue Ridge Drawing Groups, The Gilmer Arts Center, and the Blue Ridge Carvers. I also teach pyrography at Olive’s Porch in Murphy, NC and watercolor classes at The John C. Campbell Folk School. I moved to Fannin County in 1988 and am currently making my home in the Dial area with my husband, Reid Carney, my son and his wife, and two dogs. We raise chickens, honeybees, tend a garden, and soon will add rabbits to the mix! Working with my art really makes me feel alive and I love it when I see people appreciate my creations!
