Appalachian Broom Making with Denise Taranto at The Art Center in Blue Ridge, GA

Appalachian Broom Class

Learn the art of Appalachian broom making with instructor Denise Taranto. At the beginning of the course, the instructor will walk the students through a brief history of broomcorn in the region. Denise will then demonstrate techniques to the students that will allow them to become ready for an intermediate class. These techniques include foot brake control, twine tension, wrapping techniques, and how to “add-on” broomcorn to the whisk.  By the end of the class, students will learn all the necessary skills to complete two brooms. These include a Shaker Set- 3-1 whisk broom and the other a fanned turkey wing whisk broom.

About the Instructor

Denise Taranto

Denise Taranto is a serial crafter and has been making baskets, weaving Viking wire jewelry, sewing, and wrapping rocks since 2014. In 2022, she became a broom maker after attending classes at Olive’s Porch and John C. Campbell Folk School.</p> <p>Since retiring from education, broom making and crafting have become activities that feed her creativity and provide an opportunity to give back to the community. She enjoys teaching classes at Oasis, Treasured Creations, Young Harris ICL, and demonstrating broom making at the Georgia Mountain Fall Festival in Hiawassee, GA.
