Make Your Own Cardboard Mini Owl with Jimi Benedict – Artis in Residence Series
Join our third quarter of 2026 artist in residence Jimi Benedict to construct a finished three-dimensional cardboard owl. In this course, students will learn how to assemble sculptures through working with this unconventional medium. As Jimi puts it, “[ I always wanted to simply be free to create…]. Cardboard is familiar, unglamorous, and a little absurd, which is why it feels right. Making sculpture from it feels like an expression of that freedom”.
Students will be provided with a pre-cut kit of 100 cardboard pieces. The instructor will then guide the students step by step through the process of building the owl in sections. Students will learn how to layer the different parts together to create a finished three-dimensional form. Class objectives include building confidence with sculptural assembly, strengthening spatial and fine motor skills, and understanding how artwork can be created through a clear sequence of simple steps. Students will leave with a completed owl and a deeper appreciation for construction-based art.
The instructor will provide all supplies needed to successfully finish the project.
About the Instructor
Jimi (Jimiyo) Benedict
Jimiyo is an Atlanta-area artist working primarily in cardboard and paper. His sculptures transform common packaging materials into stylized animal forms that sit between craft, design, and folk sculpture. Built through cutting, layering, and shaping corrugated cardboard and other paper-based materials, the work emphasizes rhythm, surface pattern, and the structural potential of an everyday medium. After earlier work in digital illustration, Jimiyo returned to physical making through cardboard as a direct and accessible material. His current body of work explores animals as archetypal forms, using repeating patterns and simplified geometry to suggest movement, texture, and personality.
